I'm recovering from shoulder surgery. I'm winding down with my physical therapy and I'm pretty much back to 100% range of motion. Now I need to work more on strength. I have to admit that not knowing what caused my shoulder problem to begin with makes me a little paranoid about doing something that might cause another problem. So, my question is what are good exercises (machines or free weights) to keep my shoulders strong and healthy? Or maybe more important - are there exercises that should be avoided? Any thoughts?
Hey Debi, a bit of background info on your shoulder injury can help us on dishing out advice.
But the basic exercises for shoulders (using free weights) that I do are lateral raises, front raises and shoulder presses.
What I found from reading and practice is that keep the weights light when starting out and maintain good posture!
Hi Eric! I had a frozen shoulder. PT is done and I have some exercises to do at home but I still need to build my strength back up. Thanks!
Congrats, Debi, for graduating from PT!! you rock!! keep up the good work, my sista!!
If you have light weights at home (2.5 lbs) use those in lateral raises and front raises. If you dont have the weights, try water bottles! Have 2 of the same bottles and fill completely with water.
It's also important to warm up before you start any exercise and cool down when you're done. I do jumping jacks for warm ups and simple stretches for a cool down.
Perhaps Jessie has better alternatives!
